Charlotte to Sao Paulo Flights (CLT to GRU): Connections, Flight Time and Arrival Guide

Getting from Charlotte to Sao Paulo: one stop, usually in Miami

As of recent schedules there is no regular nonstop between Charlotte and Sao Paulo. American operated the route in the past, so it is worth checking whether it has returned for your dates, but most travellers connect once. Because Charlotte is an American hub, the simplest routings stay on one airline:

• Via Miami with American: the shortest and most frequent connection. Miami has several daily departures to Guarulhos, and the Charlotte to Miami leg is under two hours.
• Via Dallas or New York JFK with American: useful when Miami connections are full or timed badly.
• Via Miami with LATAM: LATAM flies Miami to Sao Paulo, and Delta's partnership with LATAM means the Charlotte leg is often on Delta via Atlanta instead.
• Via Atlanta with Delta: Delta flies Atlanta to Guarulhos, and the Charlotte hop is short.
• Via Houston or Newark with United, and via Panama City with Copa or via Bogota with Avianca, which add distance but can be cheaper.

Total journey times with one stop are typically 12 to 15 hours southbound.

Flight time and distance

The great-circle distance from CLT to GRU is about 4,700 miles (7,550 km). A nonstop, if one operated, would take around 9.5 hours; with a connection the time in the air is similar and the stop adds two to four hours. The long leg from Miami to Sao Paulo takes about 8 to 8.5 hours southbound and slightly longer northbound.

Most itineraries leave Charlotte in the afternoon or evening and arrive in Sao Paulo the following morning. The return typically leaves Guarulhos late in the evening and lands in the US the next morning, with the domestic flight to Charlotte after that. Both directions involve a night on the plane.

Leaving from Charlotte Douglas

Charlotte Douglas is a single terminal with concourses A to E. American's international departures use concourse D, but for this route your first flight is domestic and could leave from any American concourse, so check the gate on the day. The terminal has been under expansion for years and walking distances have grown; allow extra minutes between the lobby and concourse E in particular.

Security is busiest in the early morning. For an afternoon departure, two hours before the flight is usually enough with checked bags. The airport is about 10 km west of Uptown; a taxi or ride-hail takes 15 to 20 minutes, and the CATS Sprinter bus runs between the airport and the Charlotte Transportation Center.

Arriving at Guarulhos and getting into Sao Paulo

Guarulhos has three terminals. Terminal 3 handles most long-haul international arrivals, including American, Delta and United; LATAM uses Terminal 2 for many flights, with some international departures from Terminal 3; Terminal 1 is for a few domestic carriers. Confirm your terminal before the return trip, because the terminals are a shuttle ride apart.

The airport is about 25 km northeast of the city centre, and traffic is the deciding factor:

• Taxi or ride-hail: 45 to 90 minutes to Paulista, Jardins or Pinheiros depending on the hour. Ride-hail pickups are from marked zones; official taxi stands are inside the terminals.
• Airport Bus Service: coaches to Paulista Avenue, Congonhas airport, the bus terminals and some hotel areas, typically an hour or more.
• CPTM train, Line 13 Jade: from the airport station to Engenheiro Goulart, where you change for Line 12 into the metro network. It avoids traffic but involves changes with bags and does not suit a late-night arrival.

Domestic connections to Rio, Brasilia or the south often leave from Congonhas, the city airport, not Guarulhos, so check which airport your next flight uses.

When to fly and when to book

Sao Paulo is a business city first, so weekday fares and hotel rates track the corporate calendar, and weekends are often quieter and cheaper. The leisure peaks are Carnival in February or early March, the July school holidays and the Christmas to New Year period, when Brazilians travel in large numbers and flights from the US fill. Easter brings a shorter spike.

The weather is mild year-round. Summer from December to March is warm and wet with afternoon downpours; winter from June to August is dry, with cool mornings and clear afternoons, and is the most comfortable time for walking the city. Fares from Charlotte are usually softest in April, May, late August and September. Book three to four months ahead for Carnival and the year-end period; six to eight weeks is usually fine otherwise.

Entry requirements and documents

Brazil has reinstated a visa requirement for US passport holders. As of recent rules it is applied for online as an electronic visa before travel, and airlines check for it at check-in. Processing can take days or longer, so apply as soon as your dates are firm and confirm the current process on the Brazilian consulate's official website or the government's e-visa portal rather than through third-party sites. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond arrival.

Also check whether any health certificates are recommended for the regions you plan to visit, especially if you are continuing to the Amazon or Pantanal.

Time zones and jet lag

Sao Paulo does not currently observe daylight saving time. It is two hours ahead of Charlotte during Eastern Standard Time and one hour ahead during Eastern Daylight Time. Jet lag is barely a factor; what tires you is the overnight flight. On arrival, a shower, a light breakfast and a walk in daylight set you up better than a long sleep.

What travellers on this route get wrong

The first mistake is leaving the e-visa until the week of travel and finding it has not been approved when the airline asks for it. The second is booking a domestic onward flight from Congonhas with a tight gap after an international arrival at Guarulhos; the two airports are an hour or more apart in traffic. The third is underestimating the distance from Guarulhos and arriving at a central hotel two hours later than planned.
