Kansas City to Brussels Flights (MCI to BRU): Connections, Journey Time and Arrival Guide

One stop between Kansas City and Brussels

Kansas City has no nonstop to Brussels, or to anywhere in Europe, so the trip is a connection through a larger hub. As of recent schedules the routings that work best are:

• Via Chicago, Washington Dulles or Newark with United: United flies to Brussels from all three, and Brussels Airlines is its Star Alliance partner, so the two show up together.
• Via Atlanta or New York JFK with Delta: Delta serves Brussels from both, and the Kansas City legs are frequent.
• Via Philadelphia with American: American's Brussels flight is seasonal in some years, so check your dates.
• Via Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa: the Kansas City leg is on United, the transatlantic flight on Lufthansa, with a short hop into Brussels at the end.
• Via Amsterdam with KLM or via Paris with Air France: the Delta partners, with a short final flight; from Amsterdam the Thalys and Eurostar trains to Brussels are also an option if you want to avoid a third flight.

Total journey times eastbound are typically 11 to 15 hours depending on the connection. Dallas and Denver connections appear in results too but add distance without saving time.

Flight time and distance

The great-circle distance from MCI to BRU is about 4,500 miles (7,250 km). There is no nonstop, so the useful figure is the long leg: Chicago or Newark to Brussels takes roughly 7.5 to 8.5 hours eastbound, Atlanta to Brussels closer to 9 hours. Add a one to two hour domestic flight and the connection. Westbound the transatlantic legs are about an hour longer because of headwinds.

Eastbound itineraries leave Kansas City in the morning or midday, connect in the afternoon and land in Brussels the next morning. Westbound you leave Brussels in the morning, land on the East Coast or in Chicago in the early afternoon, clear US immigration there and reach Kansas City in the evening.

Leaving from Kansas City International

MCI opened a new single terminal in 2023, replacing the old three-terminal horseshoe layout. Every airline now departs from one building with two concourses, A and B, connected behind security, so the old advice about which terminal to use no longer applies. Check-in and security are in one central hall; lines are longest early in the morning, and 90 minutes to two hours is usually enough for a domestic first leg with checked bags.

The airport is about 25 km northwest of downtown. A taxi or ride-hail takes 25 to 35 minutes; the KCATA bus route 229 connects the airport with downtown for travellers with light bags. The economy parking lots are the cheapest way to leave a car for a week or two and have a shuttle to the terminal.

Arriving at Brussels Airport and getting into the city

Brussels Airport, at Zaventem, has a single terminal with two piers: Pier A for Schengen flights and Pier B for non-Schengen arrivals, which includes every flight from the US. If you connected in Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam or Paris you already cleared Schengen passport control there and arrive at Pier A with no further check.

The airport is about 12 km northeast of the centre, and the train is the easy choice:

• Train: the station is below the terminal, with frequent trains to Brussels-North, Brussels-Central and Brussels-Midi in 17 to 25 minutes. Trains also run direct to Leuven, Antwerp and Ghent, which matters if Brussels is not your final stop. A small airport supplement is included in the ticket.
• Bus: De Lijn and STIB buses reach the European Quarter and the north of the city in 30 to 45 minutes.
• Taxi: 20 to 40 minutes to the centre depending on traffic. Use the official rank; licensed taxis have a yellow and blue sign.

Eurostar and Thalys trains to Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne and London leave from Brussels-Midi, a direct train ride from the airport.

When to fly and when to book

Brussels is busiest from May to September, with the warmest weather and the heaviest demand from US travellers, and fares from Kansas City follow. The Christmas market season from late November through December brings a second, smaller peak, and the city fills during major EU summits and trade fairs, which push hotel rates more than airfares.

The quiet months are January to March and November, when fares are at their softest and the weather is cool, grey and often wet. April and October are a sensible compromise: mild, fewer visitors and reasonable fares. Summer travel is best booked three to five months ahead; six to ten weeks is normally enough for the rest of the year.

Entry requirements and documents

Belgium is in the Schengen Area. As of recent rules, US passport holders can visit for short stays without a visa, and the passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the date you leave Schengen. The EU's Entry/Exit System now takes fingerprints and a facial photo from most non-EU visitors at their first Schengen border, and the ETIAS travel authorisation has been delayed more than once, so check the official EU travel pages before you fly. Other nationalities should check with the Belgian embassy.

If you connect in another Schengen country you clear passport control there, so allow time for it at that airport rather than in Brussels.

Time zones and jet lag

Brussels is seven hours ahead of Kansas City for most of the year. Both observe daylight saving time on slightly different dates, so the gap is six hours for a few weeks in March and in late October to early November. The overnight eastbound flight lands you in Brussels in the morning after a short night; stay awake, walk, and go to bed at a normal Belgian hour and most people adjust in two days. The return, landing in Kansas City in the evening, is easier.

What travellers on this route get wrong

The first mistake is choosing a connection under 90 minutes at Chicago, Newark or Atlanta, where a late inbound flight means missing the one Brussels departure of the day. The second is flying into Brussels when the real destination is Bruges, Ghent or Antwerp, without realising that the direct trains from the airport make that simple. The third is assuming Brussels is the only option: Amsterdam and Paris are both two hours or less from Brussels by high-speed train, and a cheaper fare into one of them can work out well.
