Route Overview

New York to London is the busiest long-haul corridor in the world, and that density works in your favour: multiple carriers fly it daily from three New York airports into two London ones, so there is almost always an alternative when one routing prices badly.

Airports at each end

JFK carries the most transatlantic capacity, EWR is often quieter through security, and LGA does not serve London at all. At the London end, Heathrow has the widest schedule while Gatwick tends to price lower on leisure dates.

  • JFK to LHR — the densest pairing, with departures clustered in the evening.
  • EWR to LHR — similar timings, frequently easier on connections from the west.
  • JFK to LGW — fewer departures, often cheaper outside school holidays.

How long the flight takes

Eastbound crossings run around seven hours with a favourable jet stream; westbound is typically an hour longer. Nearly all eastbound departures are overnight, landing in London the following morning.

Route Guide

Getting into London from the airport

Heathrow gives you the most choice. The Piccadilly line is the cheapest way in and takes about an hour to the centre; the Elizabeth line is faster and only slightly dearer. The Heathrow Express is quickest at 15 minutes to Paddington, and priced accordingly.

From Gatwick, the Gatwick Express reaches Victoria in about half an hour. Ordinary Southern and Thameslink services cover the same ground for less if you are not in a rush.

Arriving after an overnight flight

  1. Clear immigration first — the e-gates accept US passports and are much faster than the desks.
  2. Buy an Oyster card or just tap a contactless card; there is no need to queue for tickets.
  3. Most hotels will hold your bags before check-in, so head straight out rather than waiting.
Book the return leg out of the same airport you flew into unless the fare difference is large. Crossing London between Heathrow and Gatwick costs the better part of a morning.

Travel tips

  • Clear immigration first

UK e-gates accept US passports and move far faster than the staffed desks. Have your Electronic Travel Authorisation approved before you fly.

  • Skip the ticket queue

Tap a contactless card straight onto the barriers. There is no need to buy an Oyster card unless you want a spare.

  • Fly out of the airport you flew into

Crossing London between Heathrow and Gatwick costs the better part of a morning. Only split airports if the fare gap is large.

  • Book Tuesday and Wednesday departures

Midweek departures on this corridor consistently price below weekend ones, and the cabins are quieter.

  • Check the terminal, not just the airport

Heathrow has four active terminals and moving between them takes 20 minutes. Your carrier decides which one you land in.

  • Leave bags at the hotel

Most London hotels hold luggage before check-in. After an overnight flight you can head straight out rather than waiting for a room.

FAQs

Eastbound is about 7 hours non-stop and westbound about 8, because the jet stream helps on the way over and works against you on the way back.
