Philadelphia to Helsinki Flights (PHL to HEL): Connections, Flight Time and Arrival Guide

One stop from Philadelphia to Helsinki

As of recent schedules there is no nonstop between Philadelphia and Helsinki. Finnair's US gateways are New York JFK, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle, with Miami in winter, so Philadelphia travellers connect once. Because American's Philadelphia hub is Finnair's oneworld partner, the simplest tickets stay inside that alliance:

• Via London Heathrow with American or British Airways, then Finnair or British Airways: American flies Philadelphia to Heathrow, and both Finnair and British Airways fly Heathrow to Helsinki several times a day. One ticket, oneworld all the way.
• Via New York JFK with American and Finnair: a short hop to New York, then Finnair's overnight nonstop to Helsinki. Chicago works the same way with a longer first leg.
• Via Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa: Lufthansa flies nonstop from Philadelphia to both hubs and connects to Helsinki frequently. United sells these as a Star Alliance partner.
• Via Amsterdam with KLM or via Paris with Air France, usually with American or Delta on the Philadelphia leg depending on the ticket.
• Via Reykjavik with Icelandair: Icelandair has served Philadelphia in some seasons; if it is flying on your dates, the Reykjavik connection is short and the two legs are evenly split.
• Via Dublin with Aer Lingus: Aer Lingus flies Philadelphia to Dublin and connects to Helsinki, with US preclearance on the way home.

Total journey times eastbound are typically 11 to 15 hours.

Flight time and distance

The great-circle distance from PHL to HEL is about 4,200 miles (6,800 km). A nonstop would take roughly eight hours. The Philadelphia to London leg takes about 7 hours, to Frankfurt or Munich about 8 hours, and the onward flight to Helsinki two to three hours. Finnair's New York to Helsinki nonstop takes about 8 hours. Westbound legs run about an hour longer against the wind.

Eastbound you leave Philadelphia in the evening, land in Europe the next morning and reach Helsinki by early afternoon. Westbound you leave Helsinki in the morning or midday and get home to Philadelphia the same afternoon or evening.

Leaving from Philadelphia International

PHL has terminals A through F in one connected row. American's international departures use Terminal A-West, and British Airways, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus and Icelandair also depart from A-West or A-East. All terminals connect behind security, with a shuttle bus between F and the others, so a domestic American connection to an international gate is straightforward but can mean a long walk.

The evening bank of European departures makes A-West security slow from late afternoon; two and a half to three hours before departure is sensible with checked bags. SEPTA's Airport Line regional rail runs from Center City stations to every terminal in about 25 minutes and is the easiest way to reach the airport without a car.

Arriving at Helsinki-Vantaa and getting into the city

Helsinki-Vantaa is one terminal building. Arrivals from London, Dublin, Reykjavik or the US go through passport control in Helsinki; arrivals from Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam or Paris cleared Schengen entry at the connecting airport and walk straight out. The terminal is compact and well signed, and bag delivery is usually quick.

The airport is about 20 km north of the centre:

• Ring Rail Line trains (I and P): from the station under the terminal to Helsinki Central in about 30 minutes, every 10 minutes or so. Buy a zone ABC ticket from the HSL app or a machine before boarding; there are no on-board sales.
• Bus: Finnair's city bus and HSL route buses reach the centre in 30 to 45 minutes.
• Taxi: 25 to 40 minutes to the centre. Several companies operate from the rank with different pricing, so check the sign before you get in.

Trains run from early morning until after midnight, which covers every arrival from Philadelphia.

When to fly and when to book

Helsinki's high season is June to August, when the days are endless, the archipelago ferries run and fares from Philadelphia peak. Midsummer weekend in late June is a national holiday; the city empties and many shops close, but flights are full. December is busy with Christmas markets and travellers heading on to Lapland.

September and early October are the best balance: mild weather, autumn colour, fewer visitors and softer fares. January to March is cold, dark and cheapest, with reliable snow for a day trip to Nuuksio or a longer trip north for the northern lights. Book summer three to five months ahead and the rest of the year six to ten weeks out, except for Lapland at Christmas, which sells out early.

Entry requirements and documents

Finland is in the Schengen Area. As of recent rules, US passport holders can visit for short stays without a visa, with a passport valid for at least three months beyond the date you leave Schengen. The EU's Entry/Exit System now takes fingerprints and a facial photo from most non-EU visitors at their first Schengen border, and the ETIAS travel authorisation has been delayed more than once, so check the official EU travel pages before you fly. Other nationalities should check with the Finnish embassy.

A ferry trip to Tallinn in Estonia is a Schengen internal crossing with no formal border check, but carry your passport.

Time zones and jet lag

Helsinki is seven hours ahead of Philadelphia for most of the year. Both observe daylight saving time on slightly different dates, so the gap is six hours for a few weeks in March and in late October and early November. An overnight flight lands you in Helsinki in the early afternoon on a short night's sleep; stay up until a normal Finnish bedtime and most people adjust in two days. In June and July the sky barely darkens, so pack an eye mask. The return lands in Philadelphia in the evening and is easier.

What travellers on this route get wrong

The first mistake is a tight Heathrow connection, where changing terminals and clearing security can take more than an hour. The second is boarding the Ring Rail train without a ticket; inspectors fine on the spot and the machines are at the station, not on the train. The third is treating Helsinki as only a stop on the way to Lapland and allowing no time for the city, its islands and the ferry to Tallinn.
